Saturday, 7 February 1981 Cardiff University INCOMPLETE SOURCE, FROM VIDEO "The Fall - Northern Cream" OSIT DVD 0008-->MPEG-->WAV-->FLAC 1. Blob 59 2. Lie Dream of a Casino Soul 3. Leave the Capitol 4. C'n'C-S Mithering-Hassle Schmuck 5. Slates, Slags etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RATIONALE FOR PRESUMING THIS SHOW TO BE "Saturday, 7 February 1981 Cardiff University": Blob 59 is only known to have been played 4 other times in 1981 (3 of those directly following this show**). A very different Blob 59 is played at Xtreems in October, so this Blob 59 was clearly part of the February set that began with it. Like the other Blob 59's in this group of performances, the song is blended into Lie Dream of a Casino Soul as a show opener. **(St. Helens, Liverpool, and Glasgow) The Lie Dream lyrics repeatedly refer to "a university town" as an ad lib vocal. Following the song MES says "that was the experimental part of the set", indicating that this might have been the first attempt at Blob 59 live in concert, placing it BEFORE the other shows rather than after. If this show IS the same as the video on the Northern Cream DVD, it was perhaps a "warm-up" for the video shot a month later at Leeds University or a failed attempt to video a complete show due to some power failure or other technical difficulties. It seems some editting may have been done as well, or a complete video exists and this is an edit from that. Q: Why would MES refer to Cardiff as a "University Town"? A: Cardiff is home to four major institutions of higher education: Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of Glamorgan and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The total number of higher education students in the city is around 43,900. The unitary authority area's mid 2011 population was estimated to be 346,100. Therefore, almost 13% of the urban population are students. Cardiff has an ethnically diverse population due to its past trading connections, post-war immigration and the large numbers of foreign students who attend university in the city. Due to its diversity, large student population, and convenient size and location, Cardiff has seen a rise in the number of people coming to the city to learn English. Foreign students are a common sight on the streets of Cardiff with a large percentage coming from Arabic and other European countries. The British Council has an office in the city centre and there are six accredited schools in the area. Q: Cardiff is the Capital of Wales, isn't that more noteworthy for MES to comment on than it's student population? A: Interestingly, "Leave the Capital" is played third in the set, after Lie Dream. Leave the Capital WAS played 1st or early in the set through most of January of 81 so it fits there as well to help place this date. After this show, Leave the Capital is moved to the end of most setlists until it begins to appear early again in MAY 1981 shows.
