The locals must have been in Weatherspoons. I was trying to teach the American couple we met all about English humor, but he just laughed at everything. Everyone piled across the road at around 9 as they believed that The Fall really would come on a 9.30. There was no support band to avoid either. Dead S made his way to the front to find me without any consideration to my thirst, so I drank his beer, then I nearly got into a scuffle because I was being 'condescending to a woman'. The fact I was just saying sorry for nearly smacking her in the face was misinterpreted as being patronising by some local Berlin loony liberal. I mean I can see why grabbing a woman's breasts or tipping a pint of piss over her head might cause some tension, but getting a bollocking for being 'somewhat condescending' seemed excessively over protective. The poor girl had to start apologising for causing such a kafuffle. To be fair though I did pat her on the head. Not sure that was wise in hindsight. I mean she wasn’t a pet dog. But she was small. I've courted trouble at gigs with this sort of thing. Briefly met the kid you travelled from St Petersburg who looked like he was 12 years old. I gave him one of my CD's which seemed to confuse him. All I know is that he got into his first ever Fall gig. He'll be even more confused now. I hope he got home safely mate. Huge thanks to Stefan Cooke of Fallonline who orchestrated tickets for a number of the UK lads who went over for this. Tickets were a real issue if from outside Germany. The venue's capacity was apparently 200, but I reckon there was twice as many in there than that. If there had been a fire we would have copped it for sure. As for the gig, well, yeah. Very little onstage mixing from MES which was unusual. A much more solid and focused gig than of late. As for the keyboards, well, I'm not fussed, but a keyboard 'player' wouldn’t do any harm. Have The fall gone through an extended period without a keyboard player before? The intro ‘music’ we were recording ‘for posterity’ was simply a bottle of water placed on the keyboard. You’ll hear it during the first encore break as well entertaining us. But it fall off and you can just about hear the bottle making a thud as it hits the deck. The genius of MES.
