Garden - 29 June 1984 Hacienda, Manchester 10:52 Thanks to djbawbag for the suggestion of compiling the 1984 performances, in response to my Beggars Belief!... 1985-1989 compilation. This is my go at it. I have been going through many of the Fall live recordings I have. Some of the songs are lost in translation, ie from performance, to tape...but here and there startling performances have been preserved. It is interesting that some of the Perverted By Language highlights lasted into the set so much. Often with the rate at which The Fall have written and recorded, numbers have quickly fallen from the setlist, barely lasting months... I've not always been fond of PBL, but the Peel Sessions box showed how powerful and mesmerising the songs would have been if recorded with better equipment and studios. MES is on record as saying that Rough Trade sidelined them to concentrate on The Smiths, and I'm not surprised at his bitterness as it must have hurt. Songs like Smile and Garden really do sound like lost classics here, towering performances which should have had a higher profile / standing in the 80's indie canon. Apologies if my writings here sound pretentious, but those are my impressions. I have compiled my own personal favourites from some high quality 1984 gigs, partly as an alternative to the live disc of The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall, as ..... suggested on my Beggars Belief torrent, and partly because compiling favourite Fall performances from each year has been a task I've long wanted to do that I'm finally getting around to. Enough ramblings... Enjoy.
